This tutorial will show you how to make this easy pincushion, a great project for beginners! I have written the instructions for hand sewing, but you can use a sewing machine if you have one.
You will need -
8 x 2.5" squares of fabric. I used Candy charm squares from the Rambling Rose collection by Sandy Gervais for Moda.
A sewing needle, and thread to match your fabrics.
Hollow fibre fill or crushed walnut shells, available from pet shops as reptile litter.
A button.
I also have some Pincushion kits available here

Instructions -
Mark a 1/4" seam allowance on all edges of all 8 fabric squares.
Mark a 1/4" seam allowance on all edges of all 8 fabric squares.
2. Place 2 squares right sides together, pin and stitch along your marked seam line from intersection to intersection. Make a backstitch at the start, take a 3 or 4 running stitches and backstitch every time you pull the needle through. Repeat this 3 more times so you have 4 pairs of 2 joined together.
3. Open and press seam allowances towards the darker fabrics, making sure they lay in opposite directions when placed right sides together. Pin 2 of your pairs right sides together and stitch across the long edge taking care to match the centre seams. Repeat for the remaining 2 pairs, and you will have 2 four patches.
4. Pin your 2 four patches right sides together and stitch around the outside edges, leaving a 1.5" gap along one edge for turning and filling. You can see where I leave a gap in the picture below.
5. Turn right side out, and fill with your chosen stuffing.
6. Using a ladder stitch, sew the gap closed. You could use your pincushion as it is now, but I like to sew a button to the middle.
And you're done! If you make a pincushion using this tutorial, I would love to see pictures of them, just use the hashtag #PSArtsPencoed on twitter and instagram.
