Flower Hexagon Blanket

20/2/2016

Hexagons are possibly my favourite shape. Anyone that has tried English Paper Piecing knows just how addicting it is. I love how such intricate designs can be made with the humble hexagon, so I wanted to see how I could translate these effects into knitted designs. I used DK weight yarn to knit mine, and will write this pattern assuming you will be too. Gauge isn't terribly important for this pattern (in whichever yarn weight you choose) as long as the finished hexagons are the same size when blocked.

I am currently still working on my blanket, due to unforeseen circumstances I thought it best to publish this pattern now rather than later. I will update this post over the next few weeks with final pictures. In the meantime, if you would like to see my progress please feel free to pop over to my instagram page - @nekkidknitter

You will need:
3.75/4.mm 80cm Circular needle for magic loop
DK weight yarn (I used Hayfield Bonus DK in Bright Lemon, Light Grey mix, Silver mix and Dark grey Mix)
2.5mm crochet hook
yarn needle for weaving in ends

Key
K - knit
P - purl
YO - yarn over
SK2PO - slip 1, knit two together, pass slipped st over
BO - bind off

Instructions

Cast on 12 stitches using the Magic Circle Cast On (also known as Emily Ocker's cast on) and spread stitches over two needles for magic loop, pull the tail of the yarn to close the hole in the centre and you're good to go. You will need to repeat the following instructions 6 times per round, so 3 times on each needle.

Plain Hexagon

Round 1 - K1, YO, K1, Place marker
Round 2 - K1, P1, K1
Round 3 - K1, YO, P1, YO, K1
Round 4 - K1, P3, K1
Round 5 - K1, YO, P to last st before marker,  YO, K1
Round 6 - K1, P to last st before marker, K1

Repeat rounds 5 and 6 until you have 21 sts in each segment of the hexie (126 total) then work the garter stitch border.

Garter Stitch Border
Round 1 - K1, YO, K to last st before marker, YO, K1
Round 2 - P all sts
Round 3 - K1, YO, K to last st, YO, K1
Round 4 - P all sts
Round 5 - K all sts (25 sts in each segment, 150 total)
Bind off all sts. I like to leave a tail long enough to seam them after blocking.

Flower Hexagon

Round 1 - K1, YO, K1, Place marker
Round 2 - K all sts
Round 3 - K1, YO, K1, YO, K1
Round 4 - K all sts
Round 5 - (K1,YO)x4, K1
Round 6 -K1, P1, K5, P1, K1
Round 7 - K1, YO, P1, K2, YO, K1, YO, K2, P1, YO, K1
Round 8 - K1, P2, K7, P2, K1
Round 9 - K1, YO, P2, K3, YO, K1, YO, K3, P2, YO, K1
Round 10 - K1, P3, K9, P3, K1
Round 11 - K1, YO, P3, K9, P3, YO, K1
Round 12 - K1, P4, K9, P4, K1
Round 13 - K1, YO, P4, K3, SK2PO, K3, P4, YO, K1
Round 14 - K1, P5, K7, P5, K1
Round 15 - K1, YO, P5, K2, SK2PO, K2, P5, YO, K1
Round 16 - K1, P6, K5, P6, K1
Round 17 - K1, YO, P6, K1, SK2PO, K1, P6, YO, K1
Round 18 - K1, P7, K3, P7, K1
Round 19 - K1, YO, P7, SK2PO, P7, YO, K1
Round 20 - K1, P8, K1, P8, K1
Round 21 - K1, YO, P to last st before marker, YO, K1
Round 22 - K1, P to last st before marker, K1

You should now have 21 sts in each segment of the hexie (126 sts total) work the garter stitch border and bind off all sts. Block hexies and seam. I use a mattress stitch but crocheting them together works just as well.

For my DK weight blanket I used the Bright Lemon Yellow for the Flower Hexies and surrounded them with the grey Plain Hexies, but you could do all Flower hexies or all Plain Hexies. There's no right or wrong.

If you are using sock yarn scraps each hexie will use just under 10g of yarn with 2.75mm/3mm needles. For DK weight yarn each hexie will use just under 20g of yarn with 3.75mm needles. I will update with more information for different yarn weights as a rough guide very soon.

I need dark/black print on white background to read patterns. This light print may please web designers; but it does NOT make your patterns usable to Me or anyone who needs high contrast to read materials!

apologies Dsynr, I update my website through an app on my phone and it shows on here as black on white background. I am not "tech savvy" or a web designer, so please try and bear with me. if you would like me to email you a copy then please contact me at [email protected] and i'll get it to you. I do try to accommodate everyone's needs and didn't realise this was an issue.
